Abstract

GARCIA, Marcos Roberto Vieira. Mortality in mental hospitals in Sorocaba and the possibility of investigating human rights violations in the field of mental health through access to public databases. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2012, vol.12, n.23, pp. 105-120. ISSN 2175-1390.

Public health, power relations and total institutions have been some of the privileged objetcs of analysis in the field or Political Psychology in Brazil. This article presents the final results of a study which aimed to investigate mortality in psychiatric hospitals in Sorocaba between 2004 and 2011 and the impact generated by the release of partial results of this research, which involved public organizations and civil society in the investigation of the situation of inmates in mental hospitals in the region, pointing out several instances of violation of their human rights. The use of DATASUS (database of Brazilian Public Health System) has been an important tool for investigating possible cases of violation of human rights of inpatients in mental hospitals, making it possible to overcome the difficulties of conducting research inside restricted places, as is the case of asylums in the region, and helped to strengthen the arguments of the social movements that fight for psychiatric reform.
