Abstract

CORREA, Felipe  and  ALMEIDA, Marco Antonio Bettine de. Theories of social movement and political psychology. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2012, vol.12, n.25, pp. 549-570. ISSN 1519-549X.

The article relates the Political Psychology with the social movements theories. It discusses various theories of social movements: the first times and "psychological" approaches, the structural approach of the Resource Mobilization Theory, the emphasis of culture and ideology in the New Social Movements Theory, the political mobilization and the search of cultural/ideological sphere of the Political Process Theory, the search of advancement of the Contentious Politics Theory. Departing from a definition of Political Psychology as an interdisciplinary field of power studies and from the notion that social movements are relevant political actors, central in contemporary power relations, the main argument of the article is that, by its relational approach of the three social spheres (economic, political/juridical/military and cultural/ideological), by its interdisciplinarity and by reconcile rational/objective and emotional/subjective elements, social structure and human action, macro and micro-social approaches, Political Psychology offers the elements so as to affirm its relevance in proper understanding of social movements.
