Abstract

IRIGARAY, Helio Arthur  and  FREITAS, Maria Ester. Survival Strategies of Gay men in the Workplace. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2013, vol.13, n.26, pp. 75-92. ISSN 1519-549X.

Inserted in the discussion on diversity of the workforce, the object of this study was to detect which survival strategies homo and bissexual men adopt in order to survive in a heterocentric corportae environment. We carried out a survey in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, with male professionals of middle-sized and large corporations, who have admitted a homo or bisexual behavior. We found out three possible attitudes towards the sexual identity: "totally out of the closet", "partially out of the closet", and "in the closet". Eventually, we detected three different survival strategies: "gladiatiors", "peace-makers", "Mr. nice guy", "superman", "Don Juan", and "the invisible man".

Keywords : Strategy; Homophobia; Heterocentrism; Stigma; Political Psychology.
