Counseling characterizes HIV testing in Brazil, with the therapeutic listening by a health professional to the service's user before and after blood collection, when exam results are delivered. In this paper, users' subjectivity conceptions are discussed, by the analysis of four Ministry of Health texts that are recommended for counselors training. The study is based on a historical perspective of subjectivity construction and uses discourse analysis as methodological resource. Results indicate that subjectivity is mainly defined as identity regarding subjects' sexual practices, even though a citizen subjectivity conception is slightly announced. The efficacy of counseling is associated to the need for the subject to talk about him/herself. Subjectivity control mechanisms are identified, inscribing counseling as a biopolitical device put at disposal for evaluation, calculation and anticipation of risks, usual to a security society.
