VILAS, Xiana  e  SABUCEDO, José Mauel. New elements on the political psychology of social movements: moral obligation and context. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2013, vol.13, n.28, pp. 437-452. ISSN 1519-549X.

Social movements are phenomena that stimulate our societies and promote social change. Political psychology tries to clarify the psychosocial reasons that promote this behavior. In recent years we are witnessing the development of very interesting theoretical proposals in this field. However, these approaches have not thrown away the load of the most instrumental positions. In this article we study elements of interest for the analysis of the protest which were separated from their study for a long time: as moral obligation or context; and propose the renewal of the instrumentality element. The moral obligation to participate relates to an inner push to act in congruence with moral principles; on the other hand the contextual variations produce relevant effects on motivation. New models of collective action must take into account the role of moral principles and context when explaining the involvement of the individual in the protest, without having to assume that the rationality of this type of behavior to be reduce.
