Abstract

CALEGARE, Marcelo Gustavo Aguilar. Strategy of identity change for access of social goods and services in the Amazon. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2014, vol.14, n.29, pp. 151-169. ISSN 1519-549X.

The aim of this paper is to present a case of identity change occurred in a riverine community in the floodplain of the upper Solimões river, whose residents have chosen to transform their selves from Amazonian Caboco to indigenous of ethnicity Kokama and Tikuna. The research was qualitative, with fieldwork between 2006 and 2011 on key periods, using documentary research, semi structured interview and field diary. For the analysis of the interviews, we used the content analysis. We point out the process by which indigenous issues have become the agenda of community discussions resulting in the transformation of identity, highlighting the psychosocial implications of this change. We debate that is not a case of reappearance, rebuilding or recovery of indigenous identities, but a political strategy of the community to have better access to citizenship. In the final discussion, we indicate to the devaluation and lack of government public policy on the floodplain communities as booster context of this event.
