Abstract

As a consequence of globalization, during the 90s, there was an increase in unemployment. Workers who lost their jobs migrate to the informal sector, characterized by poor working conditions, looking for ways to survive, and be among the activities sought by these workers, the picking of recyclable materials. In this context, in order to present the difficulties encountered by cooperatives of collectors in their participation in the production chain of recycled materials, looking for better working conditions, which will be illustrated through the experience of a Cooperative of Collectors in the state of Sao Paulo. It will also emphasize the importance of the popular education, the performance in the National Movement of Recyclable Materials and also the establishment of partnerships with civil organizations and public authorities to obtain the cooperative autonomy over their organization, acting on the principles of economics solidarity.
