Abstract

BATISTA, José Roniere Morais; LEITE, Eldo Lima; TORRES, Ana Raquel Rosas  and  CAMINO, Leôncio. Black and northeasterners: similarities in racial and regional stereotypes. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2014, vol.14, n.30, pp. 325-345. ISSN 1519-549X.

Although discrimination against minority groups is condemned by law, and despite the antiprejudice norm being more explicit today than it was a few years ago, manifestations of prejudice against blacks are still reported, and more recently also against Northeasterners in Brazil. This study aimed to investigate the current forms that racial bias, and regional prejudice against Northeasterners, assume in Brazil. College students were asked to indicate the adjectives more representative of the groups: Blacks, Whites, Northeasterners, and Southerners. The results pointed to a process of essentialization in which, even in a context that seeks to reduce social inequalities, Blacks and Northeasterners are classified by adjectives associated with the essence of these groups, which distance them from the groups considered social majorities in Brazil today.

Keywords : Prejudice; Racism; Regional Prejudice; Northeasterners; Essentialism.
