Abstract

MARTINS, Karina Oliveira  and  LACERDA JR, Fernando. The contribution of Martín-Baró to understand violence: an overview. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2014, vol.14, n.31, pp. 569-589. ISSN 1519-549X.

Violence is an important issue studied by Brazilian and Latin American Political Psychology. However, little was written about the psychosocial studies of violence developed by Ignacio Martín-Baró, a pioneer of Critical Political Psychology developed since the last quarter of 20th century. This paper aims to highlight the important contributions of Martín-Baró through a general overview of his multiple studies about violence. Living in a context of civil war, Martín-Baró developed a historical and psychosocial approach on violence. This paper will present the critical approach developed by Martín-Baró exploring three dimensions: (a) the theoretical definitions of violence and its particular manifestations; (b) the psychosocial effects of violence; (c) the relationship between war and violence. Support: National Council of Research (Brazil).

Keywords : Violence; Liberation Psychology; Martín-Baró; Structural Violence; War.
