Studies on subjectivity and identity in the Western world began at the same time as the birth of the Human Sciences, and thus of Psychology. Traditionally, such studies are seen to resultfrom a historical unfolding in Europe, where the development of human thought and thegrowing emphasis on reason bring humanity under the spotlight of science. However, dissident voices are emerging, questioning the Eurocentrism of this view of the world, historyand human beings, a Eurocentrism which hides political-economic interests. A counterhegemonic perspective is being developed by the current of critical thinking named decolonial studies. We present here the ideas of authors such as Bhabha, Spivak, Mignolo and Dussel,who advocate a different view of modern and contemporary subjectivity and identity. Our aimis to present the contribution of these arguments to Political Psychology, in order to combat a view of the subject, which, by intending to be neutral, is in fact in support of hegemoniccolonial discourse.
