MENDONCA, Gabriel Silveira; SOUZA, Vera Lucia Trevisan de  e  GUZZO, Raquel Souza Lobo. The concept of ideology in the social psychology of Martín-Baró. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2016, vol.16, n.35, pp. 17-33. ISSN 1519-549X.

This article discusses the concept of ideology in the formulations of the spanish-salvadoran social psychologist Martín-Baró, having as reference one of his main books: Acción e Ideología, 1983. After a brief historical contextualization of the author's work and the circumstances in which he writes the book, we discuss the concept of ideology, its articulations with social classes and social function. There are in the author's work two meanings of the concept; one that is synonymous with worldview and another, more elaborate, conceived as false consciousness that conceals and hides social determinants according to the interests of the ruling class. Of this last meaning, Martín-Baró affirms that the ideology foments in the dominated classes an alienated conscience that prevents them from understanding its reality and being subjects of its own history. This understanding of ideology and alienation leads the author to the proposition of consciousness as a political contribution of psychology to face those psychosocial barriers that produce suffering and obstruct the development and liberation of the popular strata.
