Abstract

SANTOS, Rômulo Ballestê Marques dos  and  PORTUGAL, Francisco Teixeira. The panoptic and the modern visual economy: from panopticism to the panop-tic paradigm in Michel Foucault's work. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2019, vol.19, n.44, pp. 34-49. ISSN 2175-1390.

This article aims to delve into the reading of Jeremy Bentham 's panopticon accomplished by Michel Foucault. The debates on disciplinary society with regard to panoptic surveillance spaces shed light on the power games shaped on the social weave. However, his understanding of panopticism exposed mainly in Surveillance and punishment, presents certain problems about the Bentham 's conception. Therefore, the reflection that follows aims to expand the knowledge about panopticon and panopticism from latest works about the subject, which not only deepen the foucaultian readings about the Bentham's thought developed in works after start the 1970, but also advance the biopolitics debates. Thus, we can indicate the necessity to overcome the critics about the panoptical simplism and to demonstrate the governmentality inscription of the pan-optical paradigm.

Keywords : panopticon; panopticism; panoptic paradigm; Jeremy Bentham; Michel Foucault.
