Abstract

OLIVEIRA, Thiago Araújo. A reflection on the current religious fundamentalism from Freud. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2019, vol.19, n.46, pp. 543-555. ISSN 2175-1390.

This theoretical study starts from the question about the possibility of reading the present manifestations of religious fundamentalism from the Freudian notion of the death drive. Its objective is to reflect on this religiousphenomenon, currently expressive, through the theoretical contribution of psychoanalysis. Elaborated through bibliographical research, the article relates approaches of some scholars of the fundamentalism with the psychoanalytic theory and, mainly, with the thought of Freud on the religion. The study results in an understanding that the intransigence, intolerance and violence, which characterize the behavior of some fundamentalist groups, constitute forms of expression and action of the death drive in the religion.

Keywords : Fundamentalism; Death drive; Religion; Psychoanalysis; Freud.
