Abstract

VIEIRA, Diovana Renoldi  and  ZORZAL E SILVA, Marta. Speeches and asymmetries in the repair of damage arising from the Samarco dam disaster. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2019, vol.19, n.spe, pp. 62-83. ISSN 2175-1390.

The article analyzes the discourses presented by the Renova Foundation in the matter of repairing the damage caused by Samarco's tailings dam collapse, which occurred on November 5th, 2015, in the city of Mariana (MG). The toxic mud flowed through the Doce River and spread along 700km affecting populations and ecosystems until it reached the coast of Espirito Santo. A Term of Transaction and Adjustment of Conduct (TTAC) was established among the federal government, the state governments of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo and the involved mining companies (Samarco, Vale and BHP Billiton), to repair and compensate the multiple failures and interdimensional grievances, which was signed on March 2nd, 2016. The analysis focuses on the discursive practices of the Renova Foundation, which is the main protagonist institution in the mediation of relations among the several actors involved in the repairing process. Those form a complex network of asymmetrical relations of both institutional and symbolic resources. Therefore, the conclusion highlights the importance of socially constituted discourse, while maintaining hegemonic relations of power and their effects on social structures, being the discourse itself the disputing object in the articulation and disarticulation of such hegemonies.
