MENDONCA, Bárbara Sabrina Pereira dos Santos et al. Care in freedom and citizenship: access to income and the deinstitutionalization of women. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2021, vol.21, n.50, pp. 253-267. ISSN 2175-1390.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to analyze the contribution of access to income through the Programa de Volta para Casa (Brazilian 'Back Home' Program) in the process of deinstitutionalization of women with mental disorders. Data analysis was carried out through the dialectical hermeneutic method of five narratives of the program's beneficiaries. The results show that these women have spent most of their lives segregated from social life, but that the income from the program, the construction of the network of institutional services and of social bonds are collaborating for social insertion, for guaranteeing citizenship rights and for strengthening the beneficiaries' autonomy. The study also points to the need to review the interdiction of beneficiaries with weakened family bonds; reveals the importance of the professionals who are part of the beneficiaries' daily lives for the strengthening of autonomy; and indicates the need for academic production that relates issues regarding aging, gender and mental health.
