The paper endeavors, by historical review and analysis of concepts and cultural and academical beliefs related to the theme, to reach a better understanding of the multiple signifiers attached to techniques of body modification through time and nowadays, and also to discuss the influence of the dichotomies natural/artificial body (or body of language), and the notion of subject as whole and transcendent/fluid and divided.
