DIAMANTINO, Rui Maia. Externalism, private speech and wit how the formation of the unconscious in psychoanalytic theory. Cogito [online]. 2012, vol.13, pp. 41-46. ISSN 1519-9479.

This paper seeks to establish a dialogue with Externalism as stated in the Putnam´s article "The meaning of 'meaning'", published in 1986, and two articles published in 2007: “Mente, mundo e autoconhecimento: uma apresentação do externalismo” written by Silva Filho and “Normatividade e linguagem privada” written by Machado. Attempts to articulate the private language and public language with the psychoanalytic theory of jokes (Witz in the original German) discussed by Freud in his article "Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious". The proposition is made in order to understand what actually can be conceived by private language and public language and questioning the limits of these concepts, arising from Externalism, appear before the phenomenology of the unconscious, whose notion of being structured like a language, established by Lacan, carries within itself a counterpoint to Externalism, since the conception of an unconscious means "mind" and "subjectivity" in the strictly private, "knowledge not known" that only the subject of the unconscious can come to know through the psychoanalytic transference.

Palavras-chave : externalism; psychoanalysis; jokes; subjectivity; language.
