Abstract

ALMEIDA, Angela Maria Menezes de. A psychoanalytic look at the female universe in the movie 'How to make an american quilt'. Cogito [online]. 2013, vol.14, pp. 35-42. ISSN 1519-9479.

This study begins with the analysis of the movie ‘How to make an American quilt’, directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse, which instigated a reflexive process about the female universe. Adopting a psychoanalytic view, some scenes of the film were highlighted in an attempt to seek an interweaving of concepts proposed by this theory and, in particular, a close look at the constitution of every single woman’s subjectivity. It also brings to reflection an exploration of ethical and aesthetic dimensions, as the result of a methodology known as patchwork, which facilitates the process of subjectification.

Keywords : Psychoanalysis; cinema; constitution of femininity; alienation and separation; masochism; sublimation; creative aesthetic.
