Considering that the use of correct spelling is one of the basic elements for a clear and precise communication through writing language, the aim of this work was to analyze these skills when starting school again after having quit it in elementary school. The sample consists of adults and young adult students from 5th through 8th grades within a special program to have elementary school certificate. As for the total amount of participants, 22 students of both sexes were analyzed, from 20 to 54 years old. An evaluation instrument to recognize the writing words was developed, because there’s not any standardized instrument available to evaluate these students. It was considered both the number of questions the participants got right or wrong and the kind of mistake, among seven categories. The research analyzed the amount of mistakes as well as the quality concerning the most frequent kind of mistakes. The categories of less frequent errors were: addition or omission of letters and similar letters. The findings in this study also found in other ones carried out with children.
