Abstract

CAPITAO, Cláudio Garcia  and  CARVALHO, Érica Bonfá. Psychosomatic: two theoretical approaches for the same problem. Psic [online]. 2006, vol.7, n.2, pp. 21-29. ISSN 1676-7314.

Based on the background concerning the meaning of health and disease, of body and soul it was made a brief review. The psychoanalytical theory, with its present model of hysteric conversion and neurosis, can be considered a historical landmark in the evolution of the psychic and somatic concepts. Marty thinks the somatic pathology as the result of an impossibility of psychic elaboration of excitements on the representative and emotional planes of the psychic system due to a deficient structuring. For McDougall, frightening fantasies that could become expressed are erased from the field of consciousness by primitive mechanisms, remaining deprived of affective impregnation and symbolic value, which forces the psychic to send suffering signals of pre-symbolic types. The conclusion is that being ill can be considered as an attempt of establishing a balance for the body, such as the symptom is an exit for the psychic conflict.
