Abstract

CAPOVILLA, Fernando César; VARANDA, Cristina  and  CAPOVILLA, Alessandra Gotuzo Seabra. Word and Pseudoword Reading Competence Test: standardization and validity. Psic [online]. 2006, vol.7, n.2, pp. 47-59. ISSN 1676-7314.

Word-Pseudoword Reading Competence Test (WPRCT) evaluates visual recognition and decoding processes during silent reading of isolated items. Error distribution among seven subtests permits classifying reading development in terms of logographic, alphabetical and orthographic stages. This standardization study was conducted with 725 elementary school students from 1st to 3rd grades. Besides producing normative data for WPRCT and its seven subtests, this study also assessed intercorrelation patterns involving scores in WPRCT, in its seven subtests, and in three other instruments: Sentence Reading Comprehension Test, University of São Paulo Picture Vocabulary Test, and Phonological Awareness test. Results showed significant increases in WPRCT scores as well as in its seven subtest scores as a function of school grade. Pairwise comparisons revealed that scores increased systematically from 1st grade to 3rd grade. There were also positive intercorrelations involving WPRCT and all three tests. This study corroborated WPRCT validity for assessing reading competence from 1st-3rd elementary school grades.
