The purpose of this work is to verify the reality experienced by hospitalized mother-baby dyads related to maternal conditions that could justify the pre-term birth or the occurrence of problems that require the hospitalization of the baby; the post-birth maternal conditions; and the existence of the hospitalized mother baby bond. 42 mothers, whose babies were hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and in the Intermediate Unit of a hospital in Aracaju (Brazil), were the subjects of the research. The technique and instrument utilized were the participative observation and semi-structured questionnaire. The following aspects were found in the results: maternal antecedents that threaten the life of the fetus and can influence the premature birth; the more frequent conditions of the newborn; aspects of the maternal breast feeding; and the anxiety and emotional conditions of the parents. Finally, the importance of the interdisciplinary team supporting the parents was verified, to the parents actively participate in taking care of their babies.
