Studies about the development of morphological awareness in children have presented results that show that the phonological structure of the words seems to be a factor that influences the morphological processing of the words. The morphemic relationships of derived and inflected words that keep the phonological transparency of the words is more easily perceived by children then when there is phonological change. This study presents data on 51 subjects form first and second grade that support the idea that the phonological structure of words help children to understand the morphemic relationship between them. A possible explanation for this phenomenon may be related to the way morphemes are storage in our lexicon.
