Abstract

The aim of this study was to search for linguistic abilities assessed by the Escala de Avaliação de Dificuldades na Aprendizagem da Escrita (ADAPE), the Escala de Reconhecimento de Palavras and Cloze. The kind of school was also investigated, arising the hypothesis that the students from private would be worse than the public schools. The sample was composed by 266 children, boys and girls, aging from 8 to 13 years old, attending at the third and fourth grades of the elementary education of public, private and SESI schools in São Paulo, Brasil. The group was classified with average difficulty in accordance with ADAPE criteria. It was evidenced problems with the recognition of correct graphics of the words, and to the Cloze test the children was in independent level. The results showed significant differences between the kinds of school in the scores of the three instruments.
