Abstract

FUKUDA, Cláudia Cristina  and  PASQUALI, Luiz. Effective teacher: a measurement instrument. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2002, vol.1, n.1, pp. 01-16. ISSN 1677-0471.

The present work was intended to develop a measure for assessing the characteristics of an effective teacher in grammar school. According to the theory of effective teaching and the psychometric rules, 103 items were developed. The sample of items was applied to 458 teachers of the elementary school, both public and private. Factor analysis showed the presence of six factors with eigenvalues that ranged from 2.66 to 18.31 and with internal consistency ranging from .76 to .90. The factors explained 32.26% of the total variance of the questionnaire. Each factor was subsequently submitted to a factor analysis to discover dimensions within them in order to make easier their interpretation. The six factors were the following: self-efficacy feeling, non-traditional pedagogical approach, expectancy regarding the student, social network of support in the work place, motivation to teach, and teaching to think. It was concluded that the questionnaire is an useful instrument to allow for the characterization of the effective teacher.
