Abstract

GOUVEIA, Valdiney V.; SINGELIS, Theodore M.  and  COELHO, Jorge Artur Peçanha de Miranda. Self-construal scale: corroboration of its factorial structure. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2002, vol.1, n.1, pp. 49-59. ISSN 1677-0471.

The present study was aimed to adapt the Self-Construal Scale for the Brazilian student population, confirming its factor structure. The participants were 400 high school students from three cities from the State of Paraiba, Brazil. Their mean age was 20 years and most of them were women and single. The answers obtained were first subjected to a principal component analysis, performing the promax rotation in which the extraction of two components with factor loading of ±.30 or higher was fixed. The results showed the presence of two factors with eigenvalues higher than 1.00, accounting for 18.1% of the total variance. The alpha coefficients were .52 and .54 for the independent and the interdependent self-construals, respectively. The confirmatory factor analysis was performed to verify this factor structure and to compare the one-factor and two-factor solutions. The later was considered to be more appropriate [Dc² (1) = 92.54, p < .01, GFI = .89, AGFI = .87] and it also corroborated the theory on which this measure was based. These results are discussed considering the findings from other cultures.

Keywords : Independence; Interdependence; Self-Construal; Self.
