Abstract

FERREIRA, Maria Cristina  and  LEITE, Neíse Gonçalves de Magalhães. Adaptation and validation of an instrument for evaluation of body image satisfaction. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2002, vol.1, n.2, pp. 141-149. ISSN 1677-0471.

In the present paper a body image satisfaction scale was submitted to Brazilian samples in two different studies of its adaptation and validity. The first investigated its factorial validity and its internal consistency in a sample of 277 university students. Exploratory factor analyses presented the two-factor solution (satisfaction with own appearance and own weight awareness), in which .90 and .79 internal consistency coefficients were obtained, that best explained the scale internal structure. The second study tested the scale final form concurrent validity by comparing obese and non obese women that, under three different criteria of obesity, presented results that differed significantly in the expected direction. The scale presented psychometric properties good enough to be recommend its use in research and as an auxiliary instrument for diagnosis in clinical settings.

Keywords : Body image; Appearance satisfaction; Weight care.
