Abstract

NORIEGA, José Angel Vera; ALBUQUERQUE, Francisco José Batista de; ALVAREZ, Jesús Francisco Laborin  and  PIMENTEL, Carlos Eduardo. Coping styles in a brazilian northeast population. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2003, vol.2, n.1, pp. 17-27. ISSN 1677-0471.

An adjusted version of the Mexican coping scale was used to obtain construct validity and differences by gender, age, religion, political preferences, couple and income from a population of Paraíba. This was done through a sampling divided by age and gender with 600 people that belonged to three age groups: 14-22, 23-25 and 36-60 years of age. Two principal components with varimax rotation where analyzed presented in three factors for six problem situations: life, school/work, friends, family, couples and health. The outcomes show us that women presented higher averages in higher means in the use of the three different coping styles. By age group, differences where observed in the three different styles; as for adolescents it was verified that they had the highest frequencies in the direct style. As for level of education in the direct style, those who where in their second grade of education presented the highest means. For religion, the evangelists had the highest frequencies in the use of direct style.
