Abstract

COLETA, Marilia Ferreira Dela. Scales to measure health beliefs: construction and validation. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2003, vol.2, n.2, pp. 111-122. ISSN 1677-0471.

This paper describes the procedures for construction and validation of the scales to measure Health Belief Model variables. The Perceived Severity and the Perceived Susceptibility scales were translated and adapted from Champion scales (1984); the Perceived Benefits and the Perceived Barriers were constructed based on a previous investigation designed to identify the behavioral beliefs related to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The scales were applied to 237 men, divided in groups of healthy, hypertensive and others who suffered myocardial infarction. The results showed that almost all scales have validity and reliability to be used in others studies.

Keywords : Scales; Health beliefs; Myocardial infarction.
