Abstract

ZENORINI, Rita da Penha Campos; SANTOS, Acácia A. Angeli dos  and  BUENO, José Maurício Haas. Assessment Scale of Achievement Goals: a preliminary study on evidences of validity. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2003, vol.2, n.2, pp. 165-173. ISSN 1677-0471.

The present study investigated evidences of validity for a scale of achievement goals. Participants were 189 male and female undergraduates. The instrument consisted of a set of 17 items, in a 4-point Likert scale and it was applied collectively in a classroom. The results of a factorial analysis showed the existence of two factors that corresponded exactly to the two dimensions of achievement based on accomplishment (performance goal) and on the interest for the task itself (learning goal), explaining 42,5% of total variance. One other indicative of concurrent validity, investigated with correlations between the scores in the scale and the grade averages of the subjects, did not present the expected coefficients when compared to international research of this construct. We suggest that further studies should be conducted to explore the conceptual aspect and the psychometric properties of this scale.

Keywords : Achievement goals; Academic performance; Motivation.
