Abstract

REPPOLD, Caroline Tozzi  and  HUTZ, Claudio Simon. Prevalence of indicators of depression among adolescents in southern Brazil. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2003, vol.2, n.2, pp. 175-184. ISSN 1677-0471.

Epidemiological studies have been showing a constant increase of depressive manifestations among young people in the last years. Thus, this study investigated the prevalence of indicators of depression in teenagers in southern Brazil, as well as risk factors that are predictors of depressed mood. The participants were 456 adolescents between 14 and 15 years of age, who responded to the Child Inventory Depression and the Scales of Parental Responsiveness and Demandingness. Scores indicative of depression were observed in 5,7% of the cases. The results showed significant differences among demographic and contextual variables, especially sex and parental tolerance/approach. All adolescents that presented depression mentioned low parental responsiveness. The predictors that were evaluated are discussed from the perspective of the interaction of individual and environmental factors, and can be useful to subsidize the elaboration of therapeutic or prophylactic intervention projects.
