Abstract

GOMES, William B.. Psychological Evaluation in Brazil: Tests by Medeiros-e-Albuquerque. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2004, vol.3, n.1, pp. 59-68. ISSN 1677-0471.

The book Tests by Medeiros-e-Albuquerque is an important precursor to psychological evaluation in Brazil. The first edition seems to be in 1924. The immediate success was responsible for various editions. The use of the term tests in English may be considered an important indication of the novelty of the theme. The word exists in Portuguese since XVIII century. Certainly, the recognition of Medeiros-e-Albuquerque as a respectful journalist and politician facilitated the book's acceptance, having strong influence on the educational philosophy of that time. The present article is organized in three parts. The first, presents the transition from an experimental psychology of elementary processes (Wundt's laboratory at Leipzig) to a measurement of superior psychological processes (Binet's laboratory at Paris). The second describes the psychological evaluation's road from Europe to Brazil. The third analyzes the book main ideas, including the recognition that tests research moved from France to US. The book is an up to date literature review of new psychological science, introducing psychological and pedagogical evaluation on a critical but warm point of view.
