Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess school and reading performance in primary school pupils. 120 children, aged 8 to 11 years, 57 male and 63 female participated on the stydy. Instruments were TDE (School Performance Test) and Test of Word and Pseudoword Recognition. Results pointed to similarities between TDE results and the sample used for standardization. Association between higher school performance (reading, writing and arithmetic) and correct answers in words pseudowords. As far as reaction time is concerned, shorter reaction times are associated with higher school performance (reading, writing and arithmetic) and with a higher number of correct answers in words but no for pseudowords. Identification and qualification of the processes used by children to build their knowledge up allow that measures be taken to face possible difficulties in school process.
