Abstract

SISTO, Fermino Fernandes. Study of the differential functioning of items to assess word recognition. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2006, vol.5, n.1, pp. 1-10. ISSN 1677-0471.

To evaluate the presence of differential functioning as function of the sex variable, 221 items were prepared to assess the level of recognition of words and analyzed. The study was accomplished with 332 children, with ages between seven to 11 years, attending at first-fourth grades of basic education of public and private schools. The test had three alternatives for responding, and for the correct response one point was attributed. The reliability coefficients were .98 to the items and .97 to the persons, and the alpha of Cronbach was .98. The first analysis indicated only four items with differential item functioning, but the Mantel-Haenszel technique pointed out three items, all of them indicated by the previous procedure. In general, less than 2% of the total of the items of the test presented differential functioning.
