The purpose of this paper was to discuss the possible correlations established between the self-concept and the difficulty in learning writing of 300 children of 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades of elementary school. In order to do it, the Escala de Autoconceito Infanto Juvenil (scale of self-concept of youngsters) and a Escala de Avaliação das Dificuldades de Aprendizagem na Escrita - ADAPE (a scale of evaluation of the difficulties in learning writing) were used. Both methods were used collectively in children, of both genders, in two public schools in a city in the state of Minas Gerais. The correlation coefficients suggest a negative correlation between the social self-concept and the difficulty in learning writing in boys of the 2nd grade, between the social self-concept and the difficulty in learning writing in boys of the 3rd grade and between the familial self-concept and the difficulty in learning writing in girls of the 4th grade.
