Abstract

VEIGA, Heila Magali S.  and  SILVA, Narla Ismail A.. Development and validation of an instrument to measure psycho-social suffering in unemployed workers. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2007, vol.6, n.1, pp. 13-20. ISSN 1677-0471.

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a measure to assess the psycho and social sufferings lived by unemployed workers. First of all, were consulted the literature and conducted interviews with unemployed workers in order to understand this construct. These data were qualitatively analysed and semantically validated and the resulting items were transformed in a questionnarie, that have been responded by a sample of 300 unemployed workers in Brasília. The analysis of principal components (PC) revealed KMO 0.92. Data were submited to Principal Axis Factoring (PAF). The rotation throgh ortogonal mehod (varimax) revealed two factors that, together, accounts for 42.82% of variability. The first factor, named psycho suffering (8 items, a = 0.83), embodied aspects such as insecurity, shame and sadness. The second (7 items, a = 0.83), was named social suffering and embodied aspects such as familiar relationship alteration and social exclusion. The social relevancy of the current study must be highlighted, for it is essential to study the unemployed workers, to identify the sufferings resultant of the not-working condition. It is also recommended, for future studies, this instrument to be applied.
