Abstract

This article describes the development of a measure of academic evaluation of the extrinsic and intrinsic motivation of students of basic education. 136 students aged from nine to 11 years old attending at third to fourth grades, being 50,7% women were studied. The Escala de Motivação Escolar that assess the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation with 31 items was collectively applied. The results of the analysis of differential items functioning by sex revealed that only two items favored one or another of these groups. Thus, the data had been analyzed by means of the principal components analysis with varimax rotation. Two factors were evidenced, one concerning to Extrinsic Motivation and another to Intrinsic Motivation that explained 36,29% of variance. The Cronbach´s Alpha furnished 0,77 to the first factor and 0,62 for the second respectively. The good precision indexes showed by the instrument support its use in research or scholar investigation.
