The purpose of this paper was to discuss the relationships between the word recognition and the self-concept of 300 children attending at the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades of two public elementary schools of the state of Minas Gerais. The Escala de Autoconceito Infanto-Juvenil and a test of word recognition were collectively administered to the children. The coefficients of correlation among the self-concept and word recognition measures reached the criteria concerning with the social and personal situations. Besides, the children who learned to recognize the word informed that they feel good, less worried, with few fear and anxiety, as well they want to help their friends and be helped.
