Abstract

BORDAO-ALVES, Daniele Palomo  and  MELO-SILVA, Lucy Leal. Maturity or immaturity in choosing a career: A psychodynamic approach. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2008, vol.7, n.1, pp. 23-34. ISSN 1677-0471.

This study aims to describe one case of psychological intervention in career guiding, focusing the process of maturity development for career choice. The subject is a seventeen-year-old adolescent attending the 3rd grade of high school. As methodological strategies, besides the recording of individual psychological attendance, some objective techniques were used, such as the Maturity Scale for Career Choice, as well as projective techniques of Psychological Assessment, such as the Career Photograph Test - BBT-Br. The subject of the study expressed difficulty in moving from childhood to adult life. He also showed immaturity in relation to accepting responsibilities in general and used idealization as a defensive strategy because of his inability to deal with the adult world and the losses that adolescence imposes on body and personality. This study discussed the possibilities and limitations of career guidance, especially in situations of low adhesion to psychological attendance.

Keywords : Adolescents; Maturity; Career choice; Adhesion to psychological attendance.
