Abstract

GOUVEIA, Valdiney V. et al. Body investment scale (BIS): Evidences of its factor validity and reliability. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2008, vol.7, n.1, pp. 57-66. ISSN 1677-0471.

This study aimed at adapting a measure of body investment for Brazilian context. Specifically, it searched to know evidences of factor validity and reliability of the Body Investment Scale (BIS). Participants were 317 women, students of public high schools from João Pessoa, PB, with a mean age of 22.9 years old (SD = 6.87). They answered the Portuguese version of the BIS and demographic questions. A Principal Component analysis, with varimax rotation, was performed. It resulted in three components, which accounted for 36.3% of the total variance, named as following: body image (a = 0.81; 6 items), body care (a = 0.70; 8 items), and body touch (a = 0.66; 6 items). These findings support evidences of factor validity and reliability for the BIS, suggesting this measure can be adequately used in body investment researches. However, new researches that consider larger and diverse samples are also recommended, in order to represent the general population.
