Abstract

BORUCHOVITCH, Evely. Scale for evaluation of motivation to learn of university students (MLS-U): psychometric properties. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2008, vol.7, n.2, pp. 127-134. ISSN 1677-0471.

The objective of this paper was to examine the psychometric properties of a motivation to learn scale for university students. The scale was constructed based on the Self-Determination Theory. It was composed of 32 items, 16 related to intrinsic motivation and 16 of extrinsic motivation content. The instrument was applied in a sample of 225 university students. The factor analysis identified a two factor structure: fator 1 intrinsic motivation and factor 2 extrinsic motivation. A significant and moderate correlation between the factors was found (r=0,47; p=0,00). The internal consistency of the instrument was assessed by Cronbach Alpha and were, respectively, 0,86 for the total scale, 0,84 for factor 1 and 0,76 for factor 2. The total variance explained was 29,55%. It is suggested that the scale be applied in a larger and more representative sample to deepen its knowledge and better employ it in motivational evaluation.

Keywords : Self-determination; Intrinsic motivation; Extrinsic motivation; University education.
