Abstract

VASCONCELLOS, Silvio José Lemos  and  HUTZ, Cláudio Simon. Development and validation of an openness scale. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2008, vol.7, n.2, pp. 135-141. ISSN 1677-0471.

Openness to experience is one of five major domains of personality based on big five model. This factor is denoted by traits such as being imaginative and sensitive to art and beauty, and intellectual curiosity. This study was designed to develop and obtain construct validity for a scale to measure openness to experience. The participants of the study were 809 individuals. Factor analyses reduced the scale to 42 items, grouped in 3 factors: "Attitude", "Habits and Values" and "Fantasy". Cronbach's alfas were 0,88; 0,82 and 0,77. The general scale presented internal consistency level of 0,78. The results corroborate similar findings in the literature.

Keywords : Personality; Openess to experience; Big five factors.
