Abstract

SAUR, Adriana Martins  and  PASIAN, Sonia Regina. Satisfaction with body image in adults of different body weights. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2008, vol.7, n.2, pp. 199-209. ISSN 1677-0471.

In the contemporaneous society, the body image of adults is strongly biased by ideals of skinniness. Under this context, the present work aimed to investigate the level of body satisfaction in individuals with distinct weights, and the putative interference of sex and age variables by using the Scale of Satisfaction with the Body Image (SSBI). One-hundred and twenty volunteers, between 18 and 55 years old, of both sexes, classified according to their body mass indexes (underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese), were evaluated. The results indicated that the satisfaction with body image is not associated with sex and age, but it is influenced by the real body size. Normal and underweight individuals presented satisfaction levels with the body image higher than those of the overweight and obese groups, indicating that the SSBI is a psychological evaluation tool able to successfully detect distinct levels of satisfaction with body self image.
