Abstract

MIRANDA, Christiane Albuquerque de; TARASCONI, Carla Ventura  and  SCORTEGAGNA, Silvana Alba. Epidemic research on mental disorders. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2008, vol.7, n.2, pp. 249-257. ISSN 1677-0471.

This descriptive-statistic paper investigated the incidence of mental disorder occurring in some public services, between 1997/ 2001. Six public institutions took part of this study, five of which offer first aid station services to both genders in the categories: child (0-12) and adult (13 - 80) and a mental hospital institution for adults. A research protocol was used and took into account age, sex and diagnosis (CID-10). 3,877 records had their data analyzed, 674 (17,38%) belonging to the child category and 3,203 (82,62%) belonging to the adult category. In children, the highest incidence happened in boys diagnosed with conduct disorders. Reactions to acute stress and adjustment disorders were the most occurring in girls' diagnoses. In adults the depressive disorders were the most common diagnosis, being predominant in women. In men, mental and behavioral disorders caused by alcohol use were predominant. The results from this study contributed to guide the services and mental health policies in the prevention and therapeutic areas.
