FIGUEIREDO, Sandra  y  SILVA, Carlos Fernandes da. Textual behaviour and articulatory features discrimination: differentiated achievement in portuguese second language learners. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2009, vol.8, n.3, pp. 289-301. ISSN 1677-0471.

According to the theory of critical period for the language acquisition, the child (Second Language Learner) presents a repertoire of phonetic production "near-native" which enables a positive perception of foreign phones and better speech intelligibility than in the older participants. Method: We developed a tests battery in an electronic format for assessing the phonetic behaviours of 61 Portuguese second language learners (L2; sample of cases). In one hand, it was analysed the presence of foreign accent or speech production according to native pattern; in the other hand, it was observed the relationship of that phonetic behaviour (with or without accent) with the phoneme identification (in Portuguese) according to the articulatory point, arguing about the relationship previously stated. Results and Discussion: Results will be discussed specifically related to the perception and production of phonetic of L2 learners in operational tests. The younger participants exhibited reading without a foreign accent, while the older subjects showed pronunciation biased by maternal accent. Moreover, these last participants show better performance in the perception of articulatory features of phones.
