Abstract

ARAUJO, Fábio Alves Ferreira Maia de; NAKANO, Tatiana de Cássia  and  GOUVEIA, Maria Lígia de Aquino. Prevalence of depression and anxiety in a prisoners. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2009, vol.8, n.3, pp. 381-390. ISSN 1677-0471.

The research has the objective to investigate symptoms of depression and anxiety in two groups of prisoners (30 arriving at the penitentiary and 30 olden). A partner-demographic instrument and two scales Beck of depression and anxiety was used to collect the data. The results showed that the prisoners of the two groups presented, in its majority, minimum levels of depression and anxiety, with major presence of indicator in the novices. The difference of means in relation to the depression was significant between the groups, what did not occur in relation to the anxiety. A positive and significant relation (r=0,583, p<0,000) was found among the levels of depression and anxiety, indicating relation between the two symptoms. We concludes that, as much the depression how much the anxiety, even so considered common pertubation in the population, had not presented high prevalence in the studied jail population, indicating that its occurrence does not seem to be related to the environment, but by individual perceptions.
