Abstract

BRITO, Leila Oliveira et al. Relation between age and schooling with school performance of students in elementary education. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2012, vol.11, n.1, pp. 83-93. ISSN 1677-0471.

This study aimed at assessing the relation between age and schooling with the academic performance of elementary students. 855 students participated in the research, elementary school students attending at public schools in the state of Santa Catarina-Brasil, aging between 6 and 16 years old. The Teste de Desempenho Escolar (TDE) was administrated to all participants, which is composed of three subtests, namely, Writing, Arithmetic and Reading. The results showed that school performance was significantly related to grades, so that it was observed a linear correlation between schooling and school performance. This was not seen with the variable age. From the data listed above, it is relevant to emphasize the importance of early identification of issues related to school performance, as well as the need for updates of standards for interpreting the results of TDE through the analysis shown in this investigation.

Keywords : academic performance; age; schooling; elementary school.
