Abstract

FONSECA, Ana Márcia de Oliveira  and  PORTO, Juliana Barreiros. Factorial validation of scale of attitudes toward leadership styles. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2013, vol.12, n.2, pp. 157-166. ISSN 1677-0471.

Internationally, transformational and transactional are among the leadership styles most frequently studied in the last 20 years. It is likely that the adoption of one style or the other could be predicted by leader’s attitudes toward each style. The aim of this study is to present validity evidences of a scale to measure attitudes toward transformational and transactional leadership styles. Items have been taken from internationally validated scales and translated to Portuguese through back-translation process. A sample of 324 professionals of public and private organizations of Brasilia has answered the questionnaire. Factorial analysis (PAF with Promax Rotation) indicted a two-factor structure, consistent with previous theory: Factor 1: Transformational Leadership (24 items); Factor 2: Transactional Leadership (8 items). The evidences point to the validity of the scale to measure attitudes toward both leadership styles.

Keywords : scale; attitude; leadership; transformational; transactional.
