Abstract

BARROS, Mônica Colognese; NATIVIDADE, Jean Carlos  and  HUTZ, Cláudio Simon. Development and validation of a gender role measure. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2013, vol.12, n.3, pp. 317-324. ISSN 1677-0471.

The instruments used for the investigation of gender roles differ widely, depending on the time and culture in which they were developed, and on what they are designed to measure. The objective of the present study was to develop and validate a gender role scale through an empirical survey about feminine and masculine characteristics. A list containing 107 expressions of feminine and masculine characteristics was prepared. This list was presented to 223 people from Southern Brazil. Participants were asked to indicate how much each one of the expressions was masculine or feminine. The results led to the selection of 20 expressions which were applied to 510 people (53.4% women) from four regions of the country. Their mean age was 29.0 years (SD=8.83) and their education level ranged from high school to postgraduate. The results indicated that the final version of the instrument (14 items) was reliable and presented evidence of construct validity indicating independent dimensions of Masculinity and Femininity.

Keywords : gender; gender roles; masculinity; femininity.
