Abstract

FORTES, Leonardo de Sousa  and  FERREIRA, Maria Elisa Caputo. Risk behaviors to eating disorders in athletes: association with various characteristics. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2014, vol.13, n.1, pp. 11-18. ISSN 2175-3431 .

The aim of this study was to analyze the association of psychology, body and demographic characteristics with risk behaviors to eating disorders (ED) in young athletes. 580 adolescents of both genders participated. We used the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), Body Shape Questionnaire and Commitment Scale Exercise to assess risk behaviors to ED, body image dissatisfaction (BD) and degree of psychological commitment to exercise (DPCE), respectively. Weight, height and skinfold thickness were measured. The findings of multiple regression showed that only the BD and the percentage of fat modulated significantly (p<0,05) the variance of EAT-26 scores in females, while among boys, BD, DPCE, fat percentage, age, ethnicity and competitive level explained significantly the variance of risk behaviors to ED. We concluded that only the BD was associated risk behaviors to ED in both genders.

Keywords : eating disorders; athletes; body image.
